William T. Spitz is a Director and Principal of Diversified Trust Company. He is also Vice Chancellor for Investments Emeritus of Vanderbilt University. During the twenty-two years in which he served as Chief Investment Officer, Vanderbilt’s endowment grew from $300mm to $3.5b while also providing net support to the University of $600mm. Vanderbilt’s endowment return fell in the top quartile of large endowments and the top 10% of all endowments during his tenure. He also served as the University’s Treasurer and was responsible for its technology transfer and business incubation efforts. Bill currently serves as a director of Acadia Realty Trust and MassMutual Financial Group. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Board of CommonFund.
Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 1985, he spent 11 years in the investment management business in New York serving as an analyst, portfolio manager, and chief investment officer. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, holds an MBA degree from the University of Chicago, and is the author of Get Rich Slowly published by Macmillan Publishing Company in 1992 and Save Smart for a Secure Future also published by Macmillan Publishing Company in 1998. He is also the author of numerous articles and the co-author of two Harvard Business School Cases.
Mr. Spitz was the recipient of the 1993 Rodney H. Adams Award, the 2005 Hirtle Callaghan Award for Investment Leadership, and the 2008 Institutional Investor Lifetime Achievement Award. He currently serves as a Trustee of Kenyon College and a Director of the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
